Gethyllis kukumakranka

Gethyllis kukumakranka is a genus of the family Amaryllidaceae. You will find these bulbs with their curly leafs in the veld. They are easy to recognize. You are less likely to find the white pristine flowers as they appear very briefly during the summer months. A few months later the seed pod which can be seen in our picture are pushed up from under the ground. On occasions, in the past the seed pods used to end up in a bottle of brandy. In early summer the leafs whiter away as can be seen on the pictures. They are seldom seen because very few people venture out in summer in the midday sun. The pods are highly aromatic and unfortunately collected and sometimes eaten. Birds play a major role in distributing the fleshy seeds.
